Every time I visit a new place, I think it is the best place in Costa Rica. But, each time Costa Rica has places even more grand to discover. I love this country more and more as time passes, and I feel very grateful to call Costa Rica my home.
Of all my experiences in Costa Rica, my adventures in Tortuguero were the most incredible yet. My friend Courtney and I traveled to Tortuguero village alone. We took three buses and a boat to the island. The island is in between the canals and the Caribbean Sea. We went on a canoe excursion to explore the large canals. The canals have many dangerous animals in them! There were sting rays, barracudas, sharks, caimans and crocodiles! But there were also cute animals like birds, turtles, monkeys, lizards, and iguanas.
The most important experience of this trip was the excursion with the green sea turtles. We went to the beach at nine o clock (pm) and walked in the dark because the lights disturb the turtles. When we arrived at a place where there were turtles we watched them with a soft red light (that does not disturb them). We were able to see four turtles! This was very rare because there are not many turtles on the beaches in October. What luck! Two turtles were making their nests in the sand, one turtle was returning to the sea, and one was laying her eggs in the sand. It was a magnificent experience, and I feel changed because of it.
I hope you all enjoyed my simple rendition of my trip to Tortuguero! For this blog I have tried to translate directly from Spanish to English. This blog gives a pretty good picture of where I am at with Spanish at this point! At least with what I am comfortable using. We just learned two past tenses so I have used them here to recount my trip. I am very excited about my progression with Spanish, and I am looking forward to learning much more in the coming weeks! Stay updated for some more advanced Spanish writing!
Tortuguero was truly one of the most amazing places I have ever visited. The village is nestled on an island with massive canals to one side and the Caribbean Sea to the other. There are no cars in the town, because it is so small there is no need. This village has plenty of tour companies and souvenir shops but also local restaurants, super markets, parks, and kind people with their children laughing and running down the walkways. Our hotel was right on the beach, with balconies overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It was spotless and fully equipped with private bathrooms, hammocks, and a kitchen for us to use. Our first night there we returned from our turtle tour around twelve o clock am to find a turtle trail right at the base of the steps. A mama turtle had made her way up from the beach, circled all the way around the hotel, and then scooted back to the sea when she didn’t find a proper nesting spot. I could not believe that her tracks were left in the sand right outside our door! Turtles are such amazing creatures. My heart felt for the mama turtles on our tour as we watched them clear out a nest where they would lay their eggs. So much time, effort, and care is put into making the perfect place for their babies to be born. Climbing all the way up to the beach several times a season is no small task for these three foot long turtles who weigh hundreds of pounds. As we ran up and down the beach from place to place in search of turtles in various stages of nesting, I couldn’t help but feel a little intrusive. We all watched in wonder as these mothers used every last bit of their strength to clear out nests for their eggs. They had no strength left to be bothered by us but I knew our presence was disruptive to their natural processes.
How could I watch and truly appreciate the life cycle happening before my eyes without being forever changed? I couldn’t. I respect these mothers and the care they give to bring new life into this world.
Tortuguero was all around my favorite trip in Costa Rica thus far! The journey there was an adventure in itself, but it went smoothly. The town was so sweet, as were the people who lived there. We were very comfortable in our hotel, able to enjoy the beach just a stone’s throw away. The tours offered there are amazing! We were very lucky to see the turtles on the beaches. And we were able to observe much more wildlife along the canals! This town is the perfect, peaceful meeting place for two completely different worlds. I would recommend a trip to Tortuguero for anyone visiting Costa Rica, it is well worth the journey.
