(My Spanish is much simpler than my Enlgish, but I try very hard so enjoy!)
Friday morning some college students lounged in the shade enjoying pina coladas and fresh pineapple juice. Just below the small restaurant, down steep hills with lush jungle foliage, was the pure blue ocean, stretching as far as the eye could see.
This is what our lives in Costa Rica have become. We wake up at 4:30am every Friday morning and catch a 6:00am bus to one exotic beach or another, this weekend it was Manuel Antonio, and boy was it incredible! Manuel Antonio is definitely home to my favorite beaches in Costa Rica thus far. The most gorgeous trees lean over the ocean, dipping their branches in its waters as if pulled down by the weight of their old age. The ocean is aquamarine, and looks as pure and smooth as a mirror, save where waves crash upon shores of soft white sand. The only thing menacing about this place is the far off cry of a howler monkey high in the tree tops.
We hiked down a long, long hill to find the beach on Friday. Even though we arrived sweaty and worn, it was well worth the walk. Courtney and I kayaked out into the bay on smooth waters. Around one corner there was a hidden mermaid lagoon, I swear that is the place that mermaids go to play when they want to feel the sun. Every single person stayed in the water for hours, enjoying being carried by the swell of the waves and feeling ocean spray on their cheeks. I napped on the sand, and watched little hermit crabs scurry around, while larger sand crabs fought with their sharp claws. As the sun was got low in the sky we made our slow way back to town and enjoyed the sunset from the balcony of a sushi bar. When I closed my eyes to sleep Friday night I felt truly lucky to be surrounded by fifteen new friends snoring in their bunk beds at the “backpacker’s” hostel.
Saturday we discovered Manuel Antonio National Park! Pure blue water and white sand beaches greeted us, along with monkeys and raccoons! They were not shy at all, running all around us in search of a snack. Along with these creatures we came across several iguanas at least 2-3 feet long. This was terrifying, but very cool. A few of us explored the jungle trails, which offered several amazing views of the open ocean. Serene and pure sky blue as far as the eye could see. We hiked, swam, lounged, and played football all afternoon.
In Spanish there is a verb “conocer” which means to “know” a person, place or thing. I think it is a beautiful expression, because I feel blessed to have “gotten to know” many new and wonderful places, including the beach town and national park of Manuel Antonio.
