My feet brushed the tree tops as I stepped off the platform and swung into the air. Air whipped my hair all around me and a scream caught in my throat. The line dipped with my weight, but held me long enough to zoom to the next platform, all shaken and full of adrenaline. The space between lines got longer as we moved through the mountains, and the excitement built with every trip across the open space. Step off the platform, zip through the air, gaining speed quickly, pull a gloved hand down hard to break, find footing on the platform, and on to the next.
Zip lining in the mountains Monteverde, Costa Rica was of the most exhilarating experiences of my life! The lines were suspended hundreds of feet above the towering tree tops. Below the canopy who knows what creatures lurked, but the chirping of birds and humming of insects was all around. One line we had to go in partners to have enough weight to make it all the way across a wide valley, and Katie and I got stuck in the middle! Hanging hundreds of feet above the forest floor, we just dangled our feet and waited for a guide to come and rescue us. He pulled me in with his legs wrapped around me, and we left Katie chilling on the wire, then he went back for her. It was terrifying, but at least we had a hell of a view. To the right rows of crops were set daintily among the hills, and cows grazed peacefully not bothered by the whirring sound of the zip lines. To the right the valley opened up into rolling hills and rivers, and a rainbow shown in the mist, just winking hello! We also went on a Tarzan swing, which sent us 98 feet down and swinging into the tree tops and out over the valley. It was probably the scariest thing I have experienced here in Costa Rica, but I was happy that I did it! And then we did a superman zip line, flying face first into a mist with no view of the end platform. Rain stung my eyes and fear clung to me, but it was freeing to be flying into oblivion.
The weather in Monteverde was very different from the rest of the country. It was colder because it is in the mountains. It was refreshing for me because a lot of places in Costa Rica are very humid. In the afternoon we rode horses in the hills. We had a great time with the horses and the guides. The horses trotted happily down the paths. We went into the forest on the horses, it was very beautiful. I liked this experience very much!
