Bonito (Beautiful): does not even begin to describe Montezuma, a beach town on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Paradise is one word I could use to describe it, but I do not think that paradise in our minds could even come close to the reality of Montezuma. We stayed in a hostel surrounded by dense forest, exotic fruits and flowers, and giant iguanas where over the balcony there was a perfect view of the ocean. In the morning monkeys feasted on fruits in the trees, and snuck glances at us with their human-like faces. They even ventured down onto the brick walls searching for extra treats. A mother monkey with her baby on her back relaxed on a branch beside my hammock, and in that moment I knew it would be hard to find a place more perfect then this one.
Naturaleza (Nature): the diversity stretched from the rolling ocean waves to the running streams and gushing water falls. Montezuma is home to three large flowing falls that feed right into the ocean. We hiked to the first of these on a very slick trail, which was an adventure in itself! Then we swam in its waters, which are rushing so fast they are brown with sediment and debris. It was exhilarating being short of breath under the falls crushing force. Liberating somehow as if we and our problems were power cleaned by the waters, and a realization that sometimes we get carried away in our busy city lives.
Relajado (Relaxed): are the lovely people of Montezuma, working the farmer’s market or taking Spanish classes. Some teach surf lessons by day, and dance the night away at the beach bar. (yes, there is only one bar) Many travelers hike the beaches in search of the perfect topless tanning spot. Montezuma offered a great opportunity to meet both local people and travelers enjoying the slow lifestyle.
Comodo (Comfortable): our hostel, an old mansion, was the perfect place for ten college students. With a large kitchen for family dinner, and an upstairs balcony for sharing a beer or a laugh, we couldn’t have found a better location. I loved waking up to the monkeys and going to bed with the moon shining over a calm sea out the window.
Cansado (Sleepy): is an understatement of the lifestyle in Montezuma. It is so slow that we barely made it down to breakfast by eleven, and to the beach by twelve thirty or one. This was the perfect place for a weekend of relaxing. I could definitely get used to waking up any time I please and meandering down to the beach just to lay out and enjoy the sun every day.
I would recommend Montezuma to anyone traveling to Costa Rica who can enjoy a lazy day at the beach, some good food any time of day, and monkeys swinging in the trees overhead.
